If you have never trained a dog before and are just getting to know your dog, expect some frustration. It might seem fruitless at times, but it is important work.
When you begin house training, select a phrase to use repeatedly with your pet. Every single time you take your pup to do his business, say something like “need to go out?”. It does not matter the phrase you choose, as long as you keep it consistent. This will keep him focused, and will teach him to associate those words with the action of relieving himself.
When you are working on crate training with your new dog or puppy, always take steps to let them know it’s their home. When you feed him, feed him inside the crate, and keep the door open while he is in there eating. This will allow your dog to have a positive association with the crate.
You need to leash train your dog. Learning to walk properly on his leash will keep you both safe when you are outdoors.
Positive reinforcement is important when training your dog. Knowing when to give him a treat, and how much, is paramount. If you do not give the treat right away, your dog is not going to understand why you are rewarding it.
“Leave it” is a command that should be taught and reinforced early on. This is great if the dog chews on household furniture or other items, such as shoes, stuffed animals, or trash.
Trying to understand how your dog is feeling. You can easily become frustrated with your pet if they do not learn the basics quickly or not at all. Do not give up! Switch things up by thinking like a dog. Your training will improve if you view things the way they do.
Training sessions should be very short. Since dogs have a tough time paying attention, you do not want to draw out the process. If you desire to do a lot more training, be sure to give your dog breaks in between training sessions.
A dog will obsess about one thing until you divert its attention. If you keep up with his training, your dog will look to you more often for direction rather than looking to the environment.
Let your dog socialize, which can really help to develop their skills. Your dog must learn how to behave when other people or dogs are present, and there is no other way to teach this skill. This will help to reduce sporadic behavior in new environments as well.
The first step of training your pooch should be to assert your control. Otherwise, the dog will think that he is in charge and will not respond to your training tactics. On walks with your dog, you should lead him and not the other way around.
When you are training your dog, try to keep your training sessions on the short side. You should use at most 15 minutes for training. Any longer and the dog will become frustrated and will not respond correctly. Following every session, allocate some playtime and give the dog lots of praise.
Don’t bother with shock collars. These devices are expensive and do not always work as well as you would expect them to. This is also a negative way to train your dog and might cause them to be aggressive. You will usually get negative results with these techniques.
If you wish to participate in agility classes, be sure to choose a breed of dog that does well with this sort of activity. Almost any dog can learn and participate in the sport, but some of the more competitive breeds are Australian shepherds, border collies, Labrador retrievers and Shetland sheepdogs.
Use the tips you just read and your dog will soon become a lot easier to manage and become easier to live with. You will notice a difference in your dog’s behavior as soon as you begin using these strategies.
No dog should pull you around. You must be the leader, no-one else. You need good tools, including the right collar and a short leash. Then you will be more successful. It is important that your dog respects your authority.
